As we head into the weekend, hopefully one with some dry weather, we wanted to share a reminder about general home security and the importance of protecting your home at every level. Burglary is often opportunistic. Offenders will spot easy access points, poor lighting or valuables left on display. Securing every floor and every entry point of your home can make a real difference, whether you live in a house or an apartment. Think about your home as a whole. Doors, windows, balconies, garages and outbuildings can all be targeted. Upper floors and rear access points are sometimes overlooked, but they can be just as vulnerable. Please remember to lock doors and windows whenever you’re out, and avoid leaving items like bins, ladders or garden furniture accessible, as these can be used to gain entry. Be mindful of what’s visible inside your home. Valuables such as jewellery, family gold and keys should be kept out of sight. If you own high-value items, consider secure storage. A well-hidden, suitable home safe, ideally fire-rated and appropriate for the value of the items inside, can add an extra layer of protection. Always check with your insurance provider to make sure you’re covered. Lighting and visibility matter. Well-lit access routes, side paths and gardens reduce opportunities for burglars. Motion-sensor lighting, CCTV and video doorbells can act as a deterrent and may provide useful evidence if suspicious activity occurs. Make sure hedges and planting don’t block lighting or cameras. If you live in an apartment: Please ensure communal doors close properly behind you, report any faulty locks or lighting, and stay alert in shared spaces. If you notice anything suspicious in your area, please trust your instincts and report it via 101 or the Surrey Police Suspicious Activity Portal. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable weekend. |
